Meet Celine. Celine is a sophomore at Hume-Fogg Academic Magnet High School and a valued volunteer at Begin Anew of Middle TN. Celine’s parents are from Vietnam. When her parents first arrived in the United States, they experienced some financially difficult times. Because Celine’s parents knew what it was like to be in poverty, they taught Celine at an early age to give back and to help others in need.
Today, Celine volunteers in the childcare program at the Nashville Satellite of Begin Anew. As a volunteer, Celine welcomes the children, helps them with dinner, plays learning games with them, and helps them with their homework. She also assists with crafts, snacks, and Bible story time.
Celine says her favorite part of volunteering at Begin Anew is just hanging out with the children and talking to them about their day. “The kids are so fun,” she said. “During my school day, I am sometimes stressed out. However, when I come here, it’s good to be with the kids because they’re so playful!”
When asked what she would tell other teenagers who are interested in volunteering, she said, “I would tell them to definitely give it a try.” Celine continued, “Lots of teenagers think they’re too young to volunteer, but we’re not!” “And volunteering also looks good on your college applications,” she added.
Many of the men and women enrolled at Begin Anew would not be able to attend if it were not for volunteers like Celine who care for their children while they attend classes. Contact Lauren Christians at firstname.lastname@example.org to learn how you can be a valued volunteer at Begin Anew.
