Derrick is a student involved in HiSET preparation studies at the Madison Men’s site. He came in the first night with a backpack, notebooks, pencils and pens and a desire to get started. He wanted to work on several subjects from the beginning - even requesting work to do at home. Derrick was determined to work hard and get his High School equivalency. After several months of study he began to test. He has had both passing and not passing scores, but is undeterred. Recently he came out from the testing room and stated that he had not passed, but he quickly said that he was okay and agreed that he would keep working.
Derrick’s experience in Begin Anew is more than just preparation for the exams. He is involved in Bible study every week and always has something to share. He has said that he can tell that God is at work in his life. He shared that he had recently been in a racially charged situation and his response to it was not typical of his “old” behavior; he credited God with this change. Supporters have prayed that Derrick and his family would find a church home and last week he shared that he and his family have joined a church where they want to be involved.
Derrick is having a positive experience as a Begin Anew student. More than once he has said, “I love this GED school.” He has found acceptance and encouragement. He has found more than he expected because his initial desire was to get in, get prepared for the tests, endure the Bible studies and get out. As it turns out, the Bible studies are enjoyable to Derrick and he is being challenged to live out the faith in Christ that he professes while also remaining determined to get his High School diploma, which is what brought him to us in the first place.
